A grand 6-bedroom villa (sleeping 10) with sprawling gardens, a private pool and sea views, set back on a lush peninsula between Cannes and Nice

From the Mediterranean Sea, the Cap d’Antibes looks wilder than the neighbouring shores of Antibes and Juan les Pins, but don’t be fooled. Tucked in amongst the sweet-smelling pines and rocky, tranquil coves are prestigious villas, well-groomed gardens and Belle Époque hotels. This undulating slice of the Cote d’Azur draws in celebrities, nature lovers and pleasure-seekers alike, with a mix of coastal paths and luxury digs. But for those looking to play the part of a long-time, well-heeled local, there’s Cap d’Antibes Garden Villa.

This sprawling 1930s residence has six bedrooms, five bathrooms, a well-stocked kitchen, sea views and a verdant, layered garden with a palm-shaded pool. Think of it as more of a friend’s summer home than a polished-for-purpose rental - with some of the quirks that come with an old house. But what it lacks in modernisation it more than makes up for in character and charm. From the black and white tiled floors and high ceilings to the columned terraces wrapped in climbing vines (perfect for candlelit dinners), this place lets you step back in time. That is, when you’re not stepping out to explore the idyllic stretch of the French Riviera it calls home.

Highs

    • The location can’t be beat, with shops, cafes and beaches all within walking distance or a short drive
    • The garden is spacious, with plenty of secret nooks to explore, so the adults can relax on sunloungers while the children run and play
    • There’s a full kitchen and multiple dining areas, perfect for groups to gather for meals
    • We’ve heard the hosts couldn’t be friendlier or more accommodating
    • The bedrooms look bright and cosy: most have French doors and stunning sea views; a couple have private balconies

Lows

    • This is an expensive part of the world, so be prepared for high accommodation and food costs, especially in midsummer, and a sizeable cleaning fee
    • The pool is small (4x8m), unheated and not visible from the house, so small children should be supervised
    • Only the bedrooms on the first floor of the main house have AC, but there are fans in the communal areas for hot days
    • Note the 6-night minimum stay, but on the plus side, they are flexible about arrival days

Best time to go

You’ll want to visit when it’s nice and hot to enjoy the pool and garden and eat out on the terrace. May to September is best, but steer clear of July and August if you want to avoid the crowds and prices of midsummer. If you’re hoping to spot some celebrities, the Cannes Film Festival is in May each year.

Our top tips

Take the boat from Golfe Juan to explore Sainte-Marguerite Island. With walking trails through pine and eucalyptus forest, secluded swimming spots and historic forts, there’s something for everyone on this little day trip.
