Basking in the sun-drenched countryside of southern France, this glorious chateau – complete with turrets – was built in the 16th century by Henri 1st de Montmorency, and was once a favourite haunt of French playwright Molière (who has connections with Pézenas). Organic vines were planted some years later, and now the whole estate has been tastefully remodelled into a chic countryside retreat. The 15 self-contained gîtes, ranging from one to four bedrooms, impeccably designed by Elfi Faure, are spacious and full of original character. Think chunky oak beams and natural stone paired with elegant French doors and décor.
Perfect for couples, families, groups of friends and wellness seekers, the chateau provides a sanctuary for slow, restorative living and has a focus on nature and biodiversity. Linger by the 20m Bali stone pool, sink into your private Jacuzzi, or embrace the healing power of nature with a sensory forest bath. There’s no on-site restaurant, but each apartment has a well-equipped kitchen, and the area brims with excellent dining options. The local town of Pézenas is an absolute gem, fit to bursting with art studios, boutique shops and beautiful flower-strewn doorways. It has a great weekend market too. Spend leisurely days cycling through vineyards to cute traditional villages or through 70 private hectares of ancient pines and oaks. And for a change of scenery, golden Mediterranean beaches are just a short drive away.
Chateau du Parc Pezenas
Pezenas, Languedoc-Roussillon, France
Highs
- Great value self-catering gîtes with smart interiors; some with private terraces and Jacuzzis
- Peaceful historic setting overlooking a private vineyard (the estate produces its own wine) and surrounded by 70 hectares of ancient woodland
- Free e-bikes to borrow - our highlight was cycling through vineyards to neighbouring villages
- Lovely outdoor pool (May-October), Finnish-style sauna and wellness experiences available
- Close to charming Pézenas and local vineyards; 20 minutes to the Mediterranean coast; 25 minutes to Béziers Airport
Lows
- There’s no on-site restaurant, so dining requires self-catering or driving to Pézenas; breakfast baskets and picnics are available
- You’ll need a car to explore
- The chateau sits beside a road, so there is some light traffic noise during the day
- Some rooms are up steep stairs, and there’s no lift; if you have limited mobility, be sure to book a ground-floor gîte
- You're generally left to your own devices here, which can make it feel more impersonal than other i-escape properties
Best time to go

A visit to Pézenas' Saturday market is a must. Arrive early to explore the stalls brimming with fresh local produce, artisanal goods and regional specialties, such as cheese and charcuterie. It's the perfect opportunity to gather ingredients for a tasty meal back at your gîte.

Rooms
Set within the château and its historic grounds, the 15 gîtes range from chic two-person apartments to spacious four-bedroom retreats sleeping up to eight. The majority are in the chateau itself; a couple have been created in separate buildings, including what was once the gardener's house. Each has its own distinct character, from the former orangery and the winegrower's home to the impressive chapel with its original stained-glass window. Period features such as grand fireplaces, patterned tiles and high-moulded ceilings have been carefully preserved and are complemented by tasteful French fittings, like curved velvet sofas and elegant artworks.
The apartments are well set up for families and friends: each has a fully equipped kitchen and thoughtfully designed living space, and all bedrooms can be configured as twins for maximum flexibility. Some have French windows opening to the outside; just over half have terraces or balconies, and six have private Jacuzzis. Those on the upper floors are brighter; ours (La Roseraie), located on the ground floor, felt a little dingy but was incredibly spacious. Many rooms offer extensive views over the estate and woodlands - our terrace led directly to the vines.
All but three of the gîtes have an ensuite shower bathroom for every bedroom. The largest gîte, Chez Nerthe, also comes with a bathtub - and a grand piano! Note that the smallest, Le Pigeonnier, has a very steep metal staircase up to the bedroom and shower, with its kitchen and toilet below, so is only suitable for those with good mobility.

- Central heating
- Coffee / tea making
- Cots available

Eating
While Château du Parc doesn't have an on-site restaurant, each gîte is well-equipped with a modern kitchen and everything you need to self-cater, from coffee machines to dishwashers. We had a gas BBQ on our private terrace (all apartments with outdoor areas are equipped with one) and enjoyed some leisurely alfresco meals overlooking the vines. The historic town of Pézenas, 3km away, has small supermarkets, artisan bakers, cheesemongers, delis and wine shops, alongside a lively covered market. There are supermarkets there too, including Aldi and Super U.
Breakfast baskets can be pre-ordered and delivered to your door each morning, with fresh pastries, bread, fruit and juices. Picnic lunches are also available for those heading out to explore the region. You can arrange a shopping service so your fridge is full on arrival, or a chef to cook for a special occasion as well.
For dining out, Pézenas has a very good selection of restaurants, from laidback bistros to haute cuisine - your welcome guide comes with recommendations. If you’re visiting in summer, the 'winegrower dinner' at nearby Allegria Vineyard is a sumptuous three-hour feast paired with local wines.
