Green Bay Phu Quoc Resort
Phu Quoc, Saigon & South, Vietnam
79 rustic-luxe, sustainably designed villas lie scattered around the peaceful grounds that hug a golden stretch of shore, but you'd never know it. Most are shrouded in rose myrtle and palm forest, while those at the front gaze out to the shimmering Gulf of Thailand. When you're not sun-worshipping on the private beach or beside one of the pools, your itinerary is set: there are bikes, kayaks and snorkelling kit to borrow, cookery classes to attend, a spa to spoil your senses and day trips to expand the mind. Graze all day at the two restaurants, or base yourself at the beach bar, whiling away hours sipping cocktails and drinking in panoramic sea views. However you choose to spend your time, it's guaranteed to fly by.
Highs
- The location, on the edge of the National Park, has remained relatively untouched by developers; quiet beaches and diverse wildlife are on the doorstep
- Couples will love the villas' romantic outdoor bathtubs, blissful spa and dreamy sunsets from the private beach...
- ...while the long list of activities, complimentary kids club, and choice of pools will be a hit with families
- A choice of two restaurants (one traditional Vietnamese, the other international fusion) and a seafront bar perfect for sundowners
- Friendly and attentive staff who go out of their way to help
Lows
- Larger than most i-escape hotels, but the villas are discreetly placed and the service is super
- Location is remote and you'll need to cycle or taxi to the nearest town, but the payoff is undisturbed peace
- Restaurant and bar prices are fairly high and there are no alternatives within walking distance
- WiFi signal can be a bit patchy, especially out of the villas - we used it as an excuse to disconnect completely

Rooms
The 79 villas are sprinkled throughout the forest and spill all the way onto the private white-sand beach. They delicately tread the line between rustic and contemporary: handcrafted wooden furnishings, bright white walls, slate floors and indoor-outdoor bathrooms, all tied together with pops of the hotel's signature matcha-green hue.
All villas have either an ocean or forest view. The Garden Villas are the smallest but still generously sized (75 sqm); you get the least outdoor space, but they are the cheapest. The Green Villas and Beachfront Villas are the same in size and layout (95 sqm), with kingsize bedrooms (that can be made up as twins) that open onto a verandah. The former sits shrouded by delicate rose myrtle trees. We stayed in the latter and loved going from bed to beach in seconds. Though the forest is pretty magical in all its wildness, the beachfront setting takes the crown.
The Hillside Pool Villas and Ocean Pool Villas (162 sqm) are perched on a hilltop, each with a private infinity pool and a cool treehouse feel. We'd opt for an Ocean Pool Villa for the far-reaching sea views, but the jungle-cocooned pools of the Hillside Villas do look quite enticing.
The Family Villa (162 sqm) has two bedrooms (one king, one twin) and a sitting room, nestled in the gardens - a good choice for discerning families but it lacks a standout view. If a sea view is a must, choose the Beachfront Sharing Pool Villa (335 sqm) which sleeps up to six in three double/twin bedrooms. It has an open-plan living area and shares an infinity pool with the villa next door. Big groups should book both to have exclusive run of the outdoor space.
For ultimate privacy, the vast Ocean Premium Pool Villa (535 sqm) is top-drawer. The modern two-storey villa is set slightly apart from the rest of the resort, with three big bedrooms, a private pool and garden, plenty of terraces and killer coastal scenery.
Bathrooms across the board are spacious and clean, featuring walk-in rainfall showers and sunken tiled bathtubs. Some have alfresco tubs or showers, which look particularly romantic in the villas surrounded by forest.

Eating
Food is a big deal at Green Bay, and with two restaurants and a waterfront bar to choose from, you could spend a full day eating and drinking your way around the resort.
The buffet breakfast laid out each morning in the circular Green Bay Restaurant pavilion is something to behold: a mammoth feast of exotic fruits, yoghurts, cheese and cold cuts, cereal, a bakery's worth of bread and pastries, plus a salad bar and stations for eggs, noodles and banh mi. The selection of noodle soups and hot dishes (like steamed seafood hakao or braised pork ribs with white beans) change from one day to the next so you'll never get bored. If you have any space left come the afternoon, a spread of cakes, fruit, tea and coffee appears here a few hours later (both included in the rate).
Lunch and dinner at the relaxed main restaurant is an international affair, with the likes of pan-fried sea bass, beef tenderloin, pizzas and burgers on the all-day menu. For something more local, head to Gio Restaurant, where traditional Vietnamese dishes including seafood hotpot, stir-fried beef and crispy squid are served in a romantic open-sided dining pavilion that juts out over the water.
Be sure to swing by the Coral Lounge in time for sunset, as the beachside bar has unbeatable golden hour vibes. Sip a well-crafted cocktail or a local beer on the terrace before heading inside for a spot of live music.
