A great value boutique guesthouse with a saltwater pool and sun-soaked terraces in a bohemian enclave just south of Essaouira

20 minutes outside of Essaouira, the little windblown village of Sidi Kaouki sits between a long sandy beach and arid scrubland. Though it’s seen some recent development, it still feels sleepy and offbeat. Just one main road runs along the beachfront, lined with bohemian cafes and crisscrossed by surfers, camels and horses. Locals and expats rumble slowly past on bikes, boards in tow, and kite-surfers dance on distant waves. Tucked into the backstreets, surrounded by wild gardens and just a short stroll from the beach, Kaouki Lodge is everything you could want in a home away from home.

Built using traditional Moroccan materials, this tranquil house has 6 bright and airy guest rooms, with exposed stone walls and big, comfortable beds. Most open into a shared courtyard, which leads to the large open-plan lounge and dining area, perfect for breakfast or curling up somewhere cosy with a book. That’s when you’re not exploring the gardens with the two resident dogs, lazing in the saltwater pool, or gathering around the fire pit with newfound friends. One such friend might be the owner, Jo, who lives onsite and fosters a serene yet convivial environment from the moment you arrive. In creating this oasis, she’s put sustainability front and centre - from supporting local artisans to using solar heating for the pool and showers - and great care goes into every detail. So all you have to worry about is when you’d like your in-room massage, or where you’d like Jo to book you a table for dinner.

Highs

    • The location is ideal: peaceful but within a short stroll of the beach and all of Sidi Kaouki’s restaurants and cafes
    • We love the focus on sustainability and supporting the local community
    • We’ve heard great things about the owner, Jo, and the attentive yet unfussy service
    • The design is simple and tasteful, decorated with traditional influence and colourful textiles
    • There's plenty of space to roam between the courtyard, terraces, outdoor pool, yoga shala, boules pitch and indoor lounge and dining area

Lows

    • No children below 12
    • The pool is compact - an intentional eco-friendly choice
    • There are no ‘family rooms’ and no space for extra beds, but there are adjoining double/twins that can be booked together

Best time to go

There's a reason Essaouira is known as the "Windy City of Africa", and Sidi Kaouki is no different. It can be blustery year-round, but the windiest season lasts from April to August. The beach can also get crowded in July and August, but the summers aren't too hot thanks to the northerly winds off the Atlantic. Winter is usually balmy with chillier evenings and great surf conditions. Spring and autumn can be the best times to visit for warm, pleasant weather and lots of sunny days.

Our top tips

The beach is absolutely magical at sunset, especially when you catch the last group of horses returning from their ride – galloping along the surf as the sea glints golden behind them – so make sure to get a good seat somewhere to watch the show.

Rooms

There are six guest rooms, ranging from cute and cosy singles to spacious, sunlit doubles. Each room is designed with traditional, local materials, featuring exposed stone walls, in-built shelves, coves and wardrobes, and shower ensuites. All are simple but not at all sparse, with flashes of colour in locally crafted textiles elegantly strewn over the beds and lounge areas.

The Double Rooms are south-facing and full of light, with pretty window seats and terraces for soaking up the sun. The Double/Twin Rooms also have garden terraces, and can be made up with either a superking or two single beds. For families with teens, a Double and Twin can be booked next to each other on request. The Single Rooms are simple and slightly smaller, but just as stylish and comfortable, with a double bed and shower ensuite - perfect for a solo traveller.

All rooms come with wifi, a carafe of drinking water, toiletries, towels and a poncho and extra towels for the pool and beach.

For groups or multi-generational trips, there is also the option of renting out the whole house. This means you get 4 double bedrooms (two of which can be made into twins on request), the lounge, boules pitch, yoga shala, kitchen and outdoor areas all to yourself. The owner stays on the grounds but not in the house, so she's still around to help with whatever you need.

  • Pool towels

Eating

Breakfast is served in the open-plan lounge and dining area, with a hearty spread of fresh fruit, yoghurt, muesli and freshly squeezed juice, along with bread, cakes, eggs on request, and your choice of tea or coffee.

For lunch and dinner, there are a few options within walking distance, or you can take the 20-minute drive to Essaouira for a wider range of restaurants and bars. If you have a car, there are also a couple of restaurants along the coast further out of town. Jo is always eager to offer up her recommendations and make reservations.

One of her favourites is Chez Larbi, a small, local restaurant right down the road, where she calls ahead with your orders so you don’t have to wait (a tagine can take up to an hour). And there’s plenty more local wisdom where that comes from, so make sure to get her guidance.

If you're renting out the whole house, it's self-catering. You'll have full access to the well-stocked kitchen, with essentials like eggs, milk, dried goods (pasta, lentils, rice, tinned tomatoes, etc), oil, spices, a fresh fruit basket, and a selection of veg upon arrival.

You can pick up basic supplies at the village shop, for more extensive shopping, it's a 15 min drive to the nearest supermarket, or there's a Carrefour (which also sells alcohol) in Essaouira 20 mins away.
