A tastefully restored haveli deep in Rajasthan’s countryside, offering heritage, warm hospitality and unhurried leopard safaris away from crowds

Set deep in Jawai’s rugged landscape, guarded by an ancient rockface, this 18th-century haveli-turned-heritage guesthouse isn’t your average safari operator. Your utterly lovely hosts – brothers Paramveer and Veer Vinod Singh – have opened their ancestral home to share their love of the land and its native leopards. Their connection to and pride in the local community runs through the whole enterprise.

There are four comfortable rooms that open onto a tranquil courtyard, designed and decorated by Paramveer. After morning prayers in the family’s historic shrine, peaceful strolls through the local village, and cool dips in the pool, embark on the main event: a magical evening safari in the Aravelli Hills joined by one of the brothers. In Jawai, the safari jeeps are given free rein to roam around, through and over the stony outcrops, getting the best view they can, ensuring you never feel crowded or in a queue. The drivers work together to track the leopards and not get in each other's way. Days are dictated by the gentle rhythm of long-held traditions and punctuated by homecooked meals with local ingredients and refreshing drinks around the fire. Perfectly positioned as a convenient stopover between Udaipur and Jodhpur, you may come for the safaris, and they don’t disappoint, but you’ll want to stay for the soulful serenity and Rajputana hospitality.

Highs

    • The evening safaris offer a unique opportunity to spot leopards away from the crowds and often include a little picnic with a spectacular sunset view
    • It’s great value for such a special experience, with meals and a daily safari included in the rates
    • The food and hospitality is top-notch – a real taste of local culture – you are looked after very well
    • You can fill your days with activities or simply relax and explore the frescoed walls of the palace ruins
    • We love the eco-friendly initiatives like water harvesting and a zero-plastic policy

Lows

    • It is a journey to get to, but the rural location is part of its charm, and you're equidistant from Udaipur and Jodhpur; they can arrange transfers in a comfortable car and trusted drivers
    • The rooms are comfortable and homely, but don't expect regal glitz and glamour

Best time to go

The best time to visit Rajasthan is from October to early April, when it's dry, warm and less humid (though nights can be chilly). From March onwards, temperatures can reach humid heights of around 38C, before the monsoon season arrives in July and runs till September. Rawla Bisalpur is closed early May to mid July.

Our top tips

Be careful not to pack your days with excursions. The peaceful ebb and flow of this place is where the magic is. Just don’t miss the opportunity to ask your hosts about the fascinating history of their estate, and the role they still play in the local community.

Rooms

This Indo-European guesthouse was built in the 1930s as guest quarters for the palace estate, and you could say it still serves the same purpose. It was tastefully restored in 2019 with four rooms connected by breezy courtyards, creating an authentic, boutique experience. Paramveer took charge of the interiors himself, going out on his motorbike to source the textiles, antique furniture and decoratives. He found most of the old photographs that now adorn each of the rooms in family albums, and returned the haveli to its original white with yellow trim. Three of the rooms open onto the sunny veranda, and the fourth is larger with a sitting area and a small terrace leading into the front entrance.

Each Jodhpur Lancer Room is simple, with traditional decor, muted palettes, double beds, private shower ensuites and views of the estate. Old photographs decorate the walls, many from the family’s own collection, featuring proud ancestors and respected rulers. Each one also has access to a gazebo for relaxation. It’s a far cry from the colour and chaos of Jaipur, with sparse architectural details and antique furniture. Here you’re encouraged to rest and reflect in between the hotel’s memorable experiences. We found the beds to be extremely comfy and soft; every room can be set up as a twin, and two rooms can take an extra bed.

  • Bathrobes
  • Coffee / tea making
  • Cots available

Eating

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in the rates, but you won’t find any dull all-inclusive hotel food here. Recipes passed down through generations are prepared with seasonal produce and fresh ingredients, largely picked daily in the estates’ own fields.

Breakfast includes eggs to order, cereals, fresh juices and a Rajasthani breakfast dish of the day. You can arrange lunch picnics on the farm or by the lake, and tea from Darjeeling or coffee from Southern India are available throughout the day.

The rest of your meals are served in the old stables, once home to the noble Marwari horses, now comprising a leafy courtyard, a well-stocked bar and a raised dining area. After a sunset safari and a cold gin & tonic around the fire, gather and share stories around slow-cooked curries and spiced vegetables. Notable family recipes (planned and prepared by their mother) to savour include Smoked Daal, Godwad Lamb, Onion Tempered Yoghurt Curry, Jodhpur Mustard Chicken Curry, Rawla Poppadums and Dumplings, Minced Daabeli Sliders, and Baked Pudding. What better way to end an unforgettable day?
