A restorative beach retreat with sea-facing pool villas and a plant-based cafe, hidden from the crowds yet within reach of Phuket Town

This peaceful beachfront hideaway quietly proves that Phuket still has its hidden corners. Here on the sheltered shores of the Cape Panwa peninsula lies an intimate collection of tropical pool villas, all staring out to sea. Directly below them is Khao Khad beach, where the water is calm, and the sand is untrodden. Owners Oliver and Adelaide first discovered this hidden spot when he paraglided in from the nearby ridges. The pair were astounded by its seclusion, and later that year discovered a run-down property nearby that was ripe for renovation, so they set about their dream of creating a restorative nature retreat on the jungly shore.

Life at Soul is good for the soul. Mornings begin with colourful breakfasts at the Beach Cafe, set right on the sand and serving delicious plant-based food. Then you can spend the day living out your tropical island fantasy. There are free kayaks for exploring the bay, plus boat trips to coral islands, SUPs and paragliding on offer. Or you can bliss out with a massage before finishing back on the beach at sunset, clinking cocktail glasses. Couples and honeymooners looking to switch off will be happiest here, though there is a two-bed villa that would suit families or friends wanting privacy without being completely cut off from civilisation. If your idea of a holiday is waking to sea views, brunching on the beach, and resetting among exotic nature, this is an immensely relaxing place to do it.

Highs

    • Set beside one of Phuket's calmest and least-developed beaches
    • All villas have pools, amazing sea views and plenty of privacy, and with just seven of them in total, the surroundings never feel crowded
    • Great veggie food served at the beachfront restaurant
    • We’ve heard good reports about the discreet but attentive staff, who are always on hand via WhatsApp
    • This makes an easy tropical beach escape - you're only an hour from the airport, and 15 minutes from Phuket Town

Lows

    • The restaurant closes at 6:30 so you’ll need to dine out for dinner (unless you choose a private dining experience on the beach)
    • The food gets rave reviews but is largely plant-based, which may not suit all
    • Some people have mentioned that swimming in the sea at low tide is tricky because the reef and rocky shores are exposed
    • There are quite a few steps from the Seaview Villas down to the beach - choose a Beachfront Villa if easy access is important

Best time to go

Phuket is warm throughout the year. November to April generally brings the driest weather and calmest seas, making it ideal for beach days and boat trips. Christmas is a lovely time to be here if you want some winter sunshine for the holidays. May to October sees occasional tropical showers, but the beach remains more sheltered than much of Phuket's west coast, so swimming is often still possible.

Our top tips

Hire a scooter if you're confident driving - the peninsula is easy to explore independently, and you'll have far more flexibility for discovering quiet cafés, viewpoints and seafood restaurants. If you prefer to be driven, download the Bolt app beforehand as you'll get much cheaper scooters or taxis this way.

Rooms

There are seven spacious private villas and one penthouse suite, each carefully positioned to maximise the sea views while preserving privacy. Choose between Seaview or Beachfront, depending on what’s more important for you.

Most villas have one bedroom, so they’re aimed at couples, but there is one two-bed option for families. Interiors are beach-inspired with vibrant tropical colours set against whitewashed walls, teak and bamboo furniture, and polished floors. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors open almost completely onto generous private terraces, and every villa comes with its own pool (but not the penthouse suite). The ensuite bathrooms have Portuguese-style tiling and large bathtubs.

The Sanctuary is the Balinese-inspired penthouse suite, designed for mindful living. There’s no pool, but you get a large terrace with glorious views across the sea to the surrounding islands. The layout inside is open-plan with a bedroom area, bathroom, and yoga/meditation space. Be aware that no meat or alcohol is permitted in this restorative space.

Features include:

  • Air conditioning
  • Bathrobes
  • Coffee / tea making
  • Hairdryer
  • Minibar
  • Plunge pool
  • Safe box
  • Satellite TV
  • Terrace/balcony
  • Toiletries
  • WiFi

Eating

Dine with your toes in the sand at the laidback Soul Beach Cafe. Breakfasts are colourful and delicious, with the plant-based menu featuring smoothie bowls, fruit-topped waffles and avocado toast, plus organic eggs for the non-vegans. There’s simply no need for sausages and bacon when the local fruit and veg is this good.

An all-day menu is then served until 6:30pm, when the cafe closes. Expect mostly Western cuisine with a couple of Thai classics, ranging from plant-based burgers to tofu massaman curry. Come anytime for a smoothie, tea/coffee or cocktails - particularly lovely at sunset.

In-room dining is available, as are three-course sunset dinners on the beach. Or you can eat out. Nearby options include At The Beach Restaurant & My Beach Restaurant, both walkable, or The Cove Restaurant in the local village. Phuket Town has myriad restaurant options as well as a lively Sunday night market.
