The City of Lakes, or the 'White City', is the biggest city in the south of Rajasthan and is situated around an oasis of 3 lakes in the arid Aravalli Hills. It's impossibly romantic, and full of palaces, temples and havelis of superbly-crafted elegance. Head straight for the Old City, which has remnants of the city wall tangling around the beautiful Lake Pichola with its bathing ghats and island palaces. It's a 9-hour drive south of Jaipur and 6 hours 30 minutes southeast of Jodhpur. We'd recommend staying outside the city itself, for a higher standard of accommodation, and taking a day trip to see the sights.
