A hidden beach paradise, accessible only by boat, with luxe jungle villas and a striking overwater restaurant boasting fabulous sunsets

There aren’t many hidden paradises left, but Ninh Van Bay might be one of them. This isolated peninsula on Vietnam’s east coast is so densely covered in jungle and mountains that the only way to get there is by sea. And what an arrival it is! You'll zip across the bay from Nha Trang, waving goodbye to civilisation, before landing ashore on a powdery beach framed by tumbling jungle. It sounds very James Bond.

The first thing you’ll spot is a vast, lotus-like wooden structure hovering above the water. This is Sen Restaurant, an architectural marvel perched on a dramatic rock formation, where you’ll dine each day among the most magnificent sea views. In the green hills behind this, a discreet scattering of spacious wooden villas, most with private pools, peep through the trees. The design throughout blends natural wood (the owner was a former wood importer), thatch and stone so that it mimics the natural landscape. Pathways wind through lush gardens filled with birdsong and the scent of frangipani, leading towards a jungle spa and a swimming pool at the water’s edge. It’s peaceful, romantic and wonderfully private, yet service is slick and thoughtful; you’re assigned a personal host who can arrange whatever you want - sunset cruises, jungle hikes, fishing trips and more. Couples but also adventurous families come here for an indulgent pause when touring the country, and many never want to hit play again.

Highs

    • A dreamy setting: untouched jungle, mountains and sea in perfect harmony - plus great sunsets

    • Villas feel cocooned and private, most with their own pools, and all with butler service

    • Excellent Vietnamese cuisine and cocktails served in the magnificent overwater restaurant

    • Leaving civilisation behind and travelling in style by speedboat from Nha Trang

    • A perfect sanctuary for breaking up a busy Vietnam tour itinerary, with a Jungle Spa, daily yoga, sunset cruises and watersports

Lows

    • Getting here is part of the fun, but it’s not a quick journey if you’re arriving internationally

    • The hillside setting and rocky terrain mean steps – not ideal for those with limited mobility

    • Due to the resort’s remote setting, the restaurant is the only place to dine, and food isn’t cheap

    • The beach isn’t wide, and it’s rocky in places, but the water is wonderful for swimming

Best time to go

Ninh Van Bay has a tropical climate. It's best from Feb-May, with blue skies, calm seas and manageable humidity. The bay is usually glassy in the mornings – perfect for kayaking, swimming and paddleboarding. Jun-Aug is hotter and more humid, often with short, sharp downpours, but they tend to pass quickly. Sep-Nov is the wettest period, with a higher chance of tropical storms along Vietnam’s south-central coast. Seas can be choppier, which occasionally affects boat transfers from the mainland. That said, you’ll benefit from fewer visitors and lush, intensely green landscapes. Dec-Jan bring slightly cooler temperatures (mid-20s to high-20s) and lower humidity, but can be breezier, particularly in the evenings. It’s a pleasant time for hiking and exploring.

Our top tips

Stay at least three nights so you can properly settle into the rhythm of boat crossings, villa lounging, lazy lunches and jungle activities. And bring reef shoes - parts of the shoreline are sandy, but there are pebbly sections and coral underfoot in places.

Rooms

Built from timber and hidden among the trees, the 37 standalone villas scatter the hillside, set apart from one another for maximum privacy. Design is contemporary but warm: lots of honey-toned wood, thatched roofs, stone basins and gauzy drapes that billow in the breeze. We like how nature takes centre stage; private terraces are enveloped in jungle, and even in the bathrooms, you get leaves rustling and sea air drifting through.

No matter which category you choose, you’ll get a wonderful amount of space (anything from 95m2 to a whopping 577m2), indoor-outdoor-style living, and a private plunge pool in all but the Jungle Rock Villas (where the rock quite spectacularly protrudes into your garden).

Book a Beachfront Pool Villa if you want your toes in the sand. Couples after total privacy and sweeping views should go for a Treetop Pool Villa, set higher up the slope. For families, there are Two- and Three-bedroom villas, but all categories have space for at least two children.

Features include:

  • Air conditioning
  • Bathrobes
  • Coffee / tea making
  • Cots available
  • Fan
  • Hairdryer

Eating

Most of the dining takes place at Sen Restaurant, designed to resemble Vietnam’s national flower. Built on a rocky outcrop in the sea, it’s an airy, timber-framed space with a high thatched ceiling and open sides that let you gaze across the water. By day, it feels breezy and informal; by night, quietly romantic.

For breakfast, expect vibrant platters of tropical fruit, flaky pastries, freshly baked bread and strong Vietnamese coffee, alongside cooked-to-order dishes. We hear good things about the pho (traditional noodle soup), too, if you fancy it in the morning. Lunch might be fresh spring rolls, zingy pomelo salads, grilled seafood and burgers, while dinner leans into refined Vietnamese flavours – think lemongrass-scented seafood, or claypot dishes rich with herbs and spice.

On the rooftop, where the lotus-like petals curl inwards, is the Sun Deck. Here you can work your way through the cocktail menu while soaking up the long views of Ninh Van Bay.

Other dining options include The Beach Bar, which hosts lively seafood barbecues each evening, or you can choose to eat in the privacy of your own villa.
