A super-spoiling Hout Bay hideaway on the slopes of Table Mountain prioritising stillness and wellness, within easy reach of Cape Town

With nine suites spread across two stunning villas, Future Found Sanctuary is a haven for inspiration and relaxation, surrounded by the foothills of Table Mountain. Pulling up in the car feels like visiting Mother Nature herself – and she’s got great taste. With its stunning grounds, beautiful organic design and a vibe that is both exclusive and welcoming, this has to be one of the most arrestingly beautiful places to stay in the world.

Maison Noir opened first as a five-suite guesthouse, joined a few years later by Villa Verte, perched higher up the slope. Both are masterpieces of airy design; interiors by art gallery Southern Guild create an exhibition-like feel. And each villa has its own dining area and pool, for maximum seclusion. Beneath Verte is the wellness centre, comprising a yoga studio, gym and Sensorium Spa, whose personalised retreats focus on sleep, nourishment, movement, mindfulness, and healing arts. Food is theatre, all locally-sourced and rooted in regenerative practices; healthy ‘harvest tables’ draw appreciation, but homemade desserts and local wines park any lofty notion of a detox. Throwing open the curtains to reveal steep mountain views framed by technicolour gardens is an epic travel memory. Seven acres of forest are traversed thrillingly via stepping stones built into the hills. Hop your way to a spa treatment, splash in the natural pond, or peep at the beehives.

Highs

  • The excellent spa offers various holistic wellness packages. Compliment yours with a hammam mud treatment, or an individually-chosen tea from the herbal selection
  • Sustainability is top of mind. Water comes from a borehole and single-use plastic is banned; ethical procurement is practised and the food celebrates the local and natural heritage
  • Effusive owner Jim Brett lives on site. Formerly running J.Crew and Anthropologie, he’s a tastemaker with plenty of tips
  • We loved observing the daily rhythms of this magical setting: gardeners cutting fresh bouquets, chefs brainstorming the day’s menu
  • This is a blissfully serene escape - perfect for honeymooners - yet close to all that Cape Town has to offer, including Camps Bay beaches and Table Mountain

Lows

  • Pricey, especially in high season, but this is a knock-out place to stay
  • No kids under 12 (unless you book the whole property) and no twin beds
  • The high tech cinema room will probably go unused when you’re surrounded by the myriad of excitements Cape Town has to offer

Best time to go

The shoulder seasons of March to May and September to November reward travellers with fewer crowds (Europe’s ‘swallows’ start arriving around Christmas for a southern hemisphere summer).

But visits at any time of year will afford different types of magic. Wrapping up for an autumnal hike before a cosy night choosing books from the living room shelves has its own appeal; but you might prefer hazy summer days spent ordering cocktails on the day beds.

Our top tips

If you can, leave some flexibility in your schedule. After days exploring at-times frenetic central Cape Town, you’ll want to drink in the peace here as long as availability will allow. Time should be carved out for lying in the sun and reading your book, while hugged by epic mountain scenery. And for taking a tour of the sustainably-landscaped garden, including the decorative Five Elements garden (complimentary for i-escape guests).

Rooms

All five suites in African Kraal-inspired villa Maison Noir have access to outside spaces, curated furniture and display local art. The three duplex Suites with lofts come with bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms with tub and rainfall showers; a ladder leads to a living space above - not ideal for the less agile - opening to the shared top deck. All have private outdoor showers too. The lavish Master and Grandmaster Suites offer private garden patios, walk-in showers, egg baths, and curved sofas for easy lounging. The villa is surrounded by a landscaped sensory garden and comes with a heated pool.

Signing documents in the richly textured check-in area, complete with a towering fireplace and sliding doors, we were flabbergasted to learn that this huge space was actually our private Grandmaster Suite. Owner Jim Brett's love of elemental design and respect for African craft is clear. We loved the botanical soaps placed by the heavenly bath (haloed by a glorious chandelier), and personalised Typo notebooks on our pillows, as well as the local products presented in beautiful ceramic pouring vessels. Huge windows let the outside in.

The four Luxury Rooms and Suites in purpose-built architectural masterpiece Villa Verte, set further up the hill, have balconies with long views across the verdant slopes of Hout Bay valley to craggy mountains opposite. Here you'll find statement wallpaper, glass doors, contemporary rugs, bespoke joinery and sleek bathrooms. The Villa Verte Grand Master Suite also has a stand-alone bathtub, wood-burning stove and walk-in wardrobe.

All four rooms and suites have outside spaces, African art and textures bathed in natural light, colours inspired by the natural world. Villa Verte comes also with a healing garden, meditation lawn, heated swimming pool and a cold plunge pool.

Features include:

  • Air conditioning
  • Bathrobes
  • Hairdryer
  • Minibar
  • Safe box
  • Satellite TV

Eating

Each Villa has its own private chef on standby to prepare memorable farm-to-table creations. Breakfast is included in your rate, while lunch and dinner are available upon request with prior notice.

Days start with a nourishing breakfast: a plethora of fresh juices, fruits, and light local options – honey, yoghurt and granola – plus homemade pastries, chocolate muffins and moist cakes piled high on plates in the kitchen. There are made-to-order dishes, too.

Mealtimes are casual, joyful affairs, guests gathering in their villa's dining room to graze as a rainbow of heaped platters arrive within relaxed timeframes (food can otherwise be plated and sent to your room). Try regional specialities like ostrich, springbok or impala, alongside nutritious and colourful grain salads – think pomegranate-studded greens drenched in watermelon salad dressing. On our visit, owner Jim Brett was delighted to pop in and share a rhubarb crumble, with ingredients proudly home-grown.

Dinner is not served seven nights a week (check before arriving and let them know if you're eating at home well in advance). The concierge team can prepare a dining itinerary for you. There are many eateries in and around Hout Bay (10 mins' drive). You'll need to book early for heavyweights like Chef’s Warehouse.

Activities

  • Mindfulness, yoga and meditation programmes take in everything from breathwork to kinesiology, via wellness guru Romy Paull's philosophy of the four Rs: Rise, Realign, Reflect, and Rest. We can safely say we ticked all four, emerging from Maison Noir’s subterranean yoga studio after a late night sound healing practice as if floating on air
  • Try grounding experiences like forest bathing, yin yoga or tai chi
  • There are two swimming pools, one for each villa, heated in the chillier months. Or take a dip in the spring water-filled natural immersion pool
  • Guided hikes for all levels, led by local experts, are available, or head up Lion's Head close by (and you can literally tumble out of bed to start a trail up Table Mountain)
  • Explore the Cape’s famed Winelands by car; the historic wine farms of Constantia are only 10 minutes away
  • Head to the beautiful sandy beaches of Clifton (15 minutes)
  • Spend an evening walking the promenade at Camp's Bay
  • The subterranean wine cellar (well-stocked with South African gems) beckons on chillier days – take a bottle down to the state-of-the-art cinema room
  • Staff can happily recommend heaps of things to do nearby, from driving breathtaking Chapman’s Peak to jogging on Long Beach or booking onto an all-female coastal foraging trip

Activities on site or nearby include:

    • Boat trips
