Staying here feels like you’re sleeping in a bohemian Menorcan home rather than a hotel. There are 12 rooms spread across the original building and a new extension in the garden. Wherever you stay, beds are topped with crisp white sheets and quirky patterned throws, and snowy walls are pepped up with hot pink armchairs, turquoise tables, or perhaps a mint-green rug. We were particularly captivated by the colourful street photography by German artist Johannes Barthelmes (a friend of the owners).

We stayed on the first floor of the original building, in one of the peaceful, airy Suites; all have nooks with extra seating, and ours had a Juliet balcony overlooking the courtyard. The Standard Double Rooms are equally charming, if a little smaller and tucked away via a smaller staircase. Or, if you want to be able to make a cuppa in the morning, choose one of the two Pocket Apartments, which come with kitchenettes as well as sofabeds for kids.

Out in the garden, there's a newer building with four additional rooms - two Standard Familiar Doubles and two Superior Doubles. We're yet to see them in person, but we think they look bright and airy thanks to the lovely garden aspects. The Superiors come with kitchenettes, while the Standards each have a mezzanine floor with two additional beds, making them ideal for families.

Eating

Ferreries’ informal tapas bars offer a taste of authentic Menorca. We spent a relaxed evening sipping ice-cold beers and working our way through mussels, fresh bread, baked peppers and meatballs in one just around the corner from Ses Sucreres. There are formal eateries here too, and even more options if you’re willing to drive a few minutes to other villages. Stephanie has a wealth of recommendations (and maps) so just let her know what you’re looking for.

Come morning, head downstairs for a buffet breakfast amongst the spindly greenery and colourful cushions of the walled courtyard garden. The spread includes Menorcan meats and cheeses, and our favourite: fresh mashed tomatoes to be eaten with bread and a sprinkling of salt. It’s all pretty laissez-faire, but we enjoyed topping up our tea and coffee as we lounged in the sun.

No other meals are served, but there’s a Nespresso machine and cool Smeg honesty fridge with snacks and drinks in the lounge - try one of the Menorcan wines, then visit the vineyard where it’s made.

Activities

• Borrow Ses Sucreres' electric bikes (daily charge) to cycle around the village and countryside, or fold the bikes up and drive to a stretch of Menorca’s picturesque coastal track (also popular with walkers and horse riders)
  
• Drive 15 minutes south to Sant Tomas and the surrounding beaches - these open stretches are framed by picturesque cliffs and grasslands, plus a few bars and eateries
  
• Take a winery tour: Hort Sant Patrici, which also makes cheese (and has a modern sculpture garden), is just 5 minutes outside the village
  
• Drive 20 minutes west to Ciuatadella’s glossy port and charming old town (filled with tapas bars, gelato cafes and ancient architecture)
  
• Drive 30 minutes east to Maó to see the magnificent Santa Maria church and Carmelite Convent, as well as the buzzing Mercado de Pescadoes and bustling harbour

Kids

Hotel Ses Sucreres welcomes all ages, and some of the rooms have sofabeds for extra guests, but there aren't any specific facilities for children.

Family friendly accommodation:

The first-floor Suites and the two Apartments in the original building can sleep up to 4, as can the Standard Familiar Rooms in the newer building. All rooms can hold a baby cot.

Location

Hotel Ses Sucreres is in the village of Ferreries, in central Menorca. It's approximately 30 minutes' drive from Maó and 20 minutes from Ciutadella.

By Air:
Mahon (28km) is Menorca's only airport. You can take a taxi from there, but we'd recommend that you hire a car. There's a free car park just 5 minutes from the hotel.
