A romantic tropical hideaway: sleek glass-fronted villas amid wildlife-rich jungle, close to whale-watching, national parks and pristine beaches

Nestled in the rainforest, overlooking the spectacular Playa Uvita on Costa Rica's southern Pacific coast, this adults-only resort is a relaxing haven that's perfectly suited to honeymooners and nature lovers alike. Named 'Oxygen' because the owners felt they had finally found a place to breathe, it's located in one of the most biologically diverse regions in the world - within an hour of arrival we were marveling at toucans, hummingbirds and iridescent blue butterflies flitting among the colourful nectar-rich flowers in the beautifully maintained gardens.

Enclosed in glass, the 12 standalone guest villas blend the inside and outside worlds. The feel is luxurious, with blissful beds, sofas and rain showers, but you're never far from the sights and sounds of the jungle. There's also a laid-back restaurant and bar overlooking the aquamarine infinity pool, plus a spa that specialises in couples' massages. It’s hard to tear yourself away, but try: the stunning Marino Ballena National Park is nearby, with world-class whale-watching, snorkelling and exhilarating zip-lining. There are also gentle hiking trails within the hotel grounds, complete with waterfalls and swimming holes.

Highs

  • The perfect mix of comfort and nature. We loved lounging in our canopied kingsize bed, watching the jungle come to life outside
  • With just 12 villas and a secluded location, the vibe is intimate and romantic
  • Beautiful ocean views from the infinity pool and restaurant - best appreciated over a passionfruit daiquiri and the hotel's signature guacamole
  • Just a 20-minute drive from the Marino Ballena National Park, with its beautiful Uvita beach (shaped like a whale's tail), mangroves and corals
  • The chance to spot wildlife (toucans, howler monkeys, even sloths) from your villa; some have private hummingbird gardens, too

Lows

  • Roads hereabouts are bumpy, and a 4x4 is necessary if you want to fully explore - though transfers and tours can be arranged through the hotel
  • Breakfast isn't included in the room rate
  • Some restaurant dishes are more inspired than others, and other eateries are a drive away if you fancy a change
  • Full pre-payment is required for some peak-season bookings

Best time to go

From mid-December to mid-April it is mostly dry and hot. The rainy season starts in April and the wettest months are September and October. However the rain means the jungle bursts into bloom, and some spectacular lightning storms ensue; you'll also tend to get several hours of sunshine in the middle of the day. For whale-watching, July to the end of October are considered the best months.

Our top tips

There is so much to do and enjoy in the surrounding area that you will need at least 5 days to truly explore - and also have enough time to soak up the atmosphere of pure relaxation at the hotel. This is Costa Rica at its finest.

Rooms

There are 12 villas - 8 with an ocean view and 4 with a jungle view. All are constructed almost entirely from glass and dark wood, but despite the floor-to-ceiling windows they feel private and secluded. Their interiors are near-identical, with a very comfortable kingsize canopied bed, and an ensuite bathroom with a rain shower and double sinks carved from local stone. Outside on the large veranda is a spacious white sofa or curvaceous loveseat which you can enclose in billowing mosquito-net curtains (although we weren't bothered by mosquitoes during our stay). Several villas also have private hummingbird gardens in front.

For nature lovers we would particularly recommend the Jungle View Villas. While the Ocean View Villas have spectacular vistas, you're more likely to spot exciting wildlife from the jungle view options - and you can always admire the sea from the restaurant and pool. The Spa Villas come with alfresco freestanding tubs, so you can admire whichever view you choose as you soak on your terrace.

Features include:

  • Air conditioning
  • Bathrobes
  • Coffee / tea making
  • Fan
  • Hairdryer
  • Minibar
  • Mosquito net
  • Safe box
  • Toiletries
  • WiFi

Eating

The breezy restaurant serves a variety of meals and snacks throughout the day, which you can enjoy inside, by the pool or in your villa. The native chef celebrates indigenous cuisine through local organic ingredients and traditional cooking methods. There is a choice of vegetarian options, along with good wines and interesting cocktails - the jalapeño martinis and passionfruit daiquiris make perfect sundowners.

Breakfast (included) was our favourite - delicious and very satisfying. We especially enjoyed the Desayuno Tico, a dish of gallo pinto (Costa Rica's signature rice and beans), plantain, eggs, avocado and tortilla. The buttermilk pancakes with pineapple and watermelon were also scrumptious.

If you fancy a change of scene, some of Costa Rica's best restaurants are located down the coast at Ojochal. Citrus and Exotica both receive rave reviews and are well worth the 30-minute drive.
