One of the best affordable resorts in the Maldives, with spacious villas and stunning beaches on a coral-fringed island in Raa Atoll

Boasting a fantastic lagoon and colourful house reef, the affordable luxury of Reethi Faru Resort has been a welcome shot in the arm to the pricey Maldives’ tourism market. Shunning marbled surfaces and gold-rimmed bathtubs, Reethi is a simply designed yet highly functional island retreat with a relaxing ambiance that delivers big on the paradise experience.

Opened in late 2017 in the northern Raa Atoll, and occupying a large, beautiful, oval-shaped island encircled by white sands and lush vegetation, its 150 villas are expertly positioned to allow maximum space and privacy for guests. All are airy and spacious, and nearly all come with bathtubs, rain showers and terraces with garden or beach views. No prize for guessing the most popular - the 44 overwater villas, which jut out across the lagoon on the western tip of the island, and provide breathless views of the Indian Ocean, plus private terraces with ladders for direct access to those clear blue waters. While families are welcome, the vibe here definitely leans towards couples and honeymooners.

An impressive 6 restaurants and 6 bars cover all your food and drink requirements, the Balinese-themed spa offers pampering aplenty, and there's a seriously superb watersports centre offering just about everything from dolphin safaris to catamaran sailing, plus a brilliant dive centre. The star attraction, of course, is the vibrant house reef (reethi faru – hence the name) where rays, reef sharks and turtle sightings are all but guaranteed. As affordable luxury goes, that’s priceless.

Highs

  • An outstanding island location with a beautiful lagoon and large house reef populated with tropical fish and turtles
  • An impressive 7 room types, including Water Villas, Beach Pool Villas and Two-Bedroom Beach Suites
  • Wide variety of dining options – 6 restaurants, 6 bars – running the gamut of buffets, fine dining and intimate sunset suppers (various meal plans available)
  • Superb watersports centre and dive centre with near-limitless options for exploring your ocean surroundings
  • As you arrive by seaplane, prepare to be dazzled by views of pristine reef systems and tiny deserted islands

Lows

  • Although the resort has great family villas, parents should note there’s no kids club
  • A noticeable lack of female staff, which feels at odds with its guests, who are mostly dreamy-eyed couples
  • Some beachfront villas can attract mosquitoes at dusk (insect repellent is provided), but we admired the resort's eco-friendly bug spraying policy
  • The price of the mandatory seaplane transfer to and from the island is steep

Best time to go

September to April is the best for sunshine, with February-April the hottest and driest periods - though this also means more visitors and higher prices. June-October brings the monsoons, but it's still warm and you can often go weeks without a downpour. The best prices are from May onward. Avoid the Christmas period, when occupancy and prices are at their highest. Chinese New Year (5 February in 2019; 25 January in 2020) should also be avoided. Reethi Faru is open all year.

Our top tips

If you want to swim with turtles, the best snorkeling spot on the island is between Vakaru restaurant and the curved sandbank on the north-eastern tip. (We saw Green turtles galore.)

Rooms

With 150 villas you might expect a lack of privacy, but the design and location of villa categories are quite impressive. Protruding into the the lagoon, the thatched Water Villas are the clear standout. Positioned on stilts over baby-blue waters, these villas have spacious, functional interiors with kingsize beds (which face the ocean) and private terraces with a ladder leading down to the lagoon. All come with bathtubs, rain showers, huge TVs, and sun loungers. Though packed together, their angled terraces come with screens ensuring maximum privacy - and the chance to sunbathe nude.

Deluxe Beach Pool Villas occupy the western beach and are just steps from white sands. The sand-and-salmon interiors are spotless and include a spacious open-air bathroom with a tub and rain shower. The shaded terrace opens onto a private patch of sand with a large plunge pool – providing relief from the Maldivian heat, if you can't manage the few steps to the sea.

The Deluxe Beach Villas are found on the northwest beach. Bright and spacious (especially the large 2-bedroom villas), they have airy stone-tiled bathrooms with tubs and rain showers, huge kingsize beds, and pleasing blue, lime and beige furnishings, plus large shaded terraces.

Entry level Garden Villas are located slightly inland, but still only 100m (or less) from the beach. Spotless and functional, you still get plenty of comfort – a large kingsize bed, a spacious semi-open bathroom with rain shower, and a decent terrace.

Features include:

  • Bathrobes
  • Hairdryer
  • In-room treatments available
  • Minibar
  • Safe box

Eating

Reethi Faru delivers 6 restaurants and 6 bars, all created by executive chef Sreekant. The largest, Vakaru, is the main buffet-style restaurant with different cuisine themes each evening. It’s a large open dining space with great beach views, and the best option for continental or cooked breakfasts.

Located on small pier over the lagoon, Dhiyavaru restaurant is open 24 hours – quite rare for the Maldives – and offers 2 tiers of decking to soak in those turquoise views. For lunch there’s a good selection of Western and Asian dishes, decent starters (spring rolls, bruschetta, chefs salads), plus sandwiches, burgers and hot dogs; mains include pizzas and pastas (try the Maldivian reef fish penne), impressive seafood (grilled lobster, lagoon prawns in coconut gravy) and a large meat menu (duck, chicken, pork, lamb or beef). There’s also a ‘cake of the day’ in the dessert menu. The coffee shop at Dhiyavaru allows you to get your daily brew 24/7.

The romantic evening restaurant, Huvandhu Garden, is situated on the beach and delivers a fine dining setup with 3 to 5 course meals served as a fusion of Western and Maldivian cuisines – lamb racks, fried chicken Maldivian curry, grilled chicken fillet, seared scallops, and a fantastic lobster menu. It also has a decent vegetarian menu.

Reethi Grill serves open-air grill specials with live cooking stations and your own personal dining cabana. Expect wood-oven pizzas, seafood tandooris, seared chicken, grilled ribeye, lamb kebabs and surf ‘n’ turf platters.

For cocktails and drinks, choose between the main Haruge Bar – complete with games room, a dance floor, and a whopping big screen TV; the tranquil Nala Bar on the eastern beach; the Veyo Bar near the infinity pool, which serves revitalising smoothies; the intimate Sunset Bar on the southwest beach, with great signature cocktails (and a few mocktails); and the one-stop open-air Raalhu Café for wine and beer, soft drinks, light snacks, plus burgers and pizzas.
