A beautifully restored B&B with five bedrooms, sea views and gourmet meals, set in verdant gardens on the Côte d'Émeraude

Dinard has been a seaside resort for the crème de la crème since the late 19th century, when British aristocrats and the Parisian elite first flocked in for sea bathing and oyster quaffing. Many of their grand cliff-side villas still stand proudly along the shoreline, but none quite like Villa Haute Guais. Just visible through the trees, this historic residence gazes out across the Baie du Prieuré toward Dinard’s east shore, and promises a truly luxurious stay on Brittany’s Emerald Coast.

The villa’s five rooms and suites are meticulously designed by Sophie Bannier, who pulled much of her inspiration from across the channel. Bold colours, eclectic wallpapers, British fabrics and touches of Art Deco flair breathe new life into this Belle Époque mansion, while still preserving its past (and original Odorico murals). The rooms even take their names from British aristocracy. But fear not, the cuisine is decidedly, deliciously French, from the breakfast spread of fresh bread and pastries to the table d’hotes serving up local delicacies in the warm and vibrant dining room. And with Saint-Malo and the beaches of Vicomte and Prieure on your doorstep, bon vivants are well placed for a charming seaside sojourn.

Highs

    • The seaside location is perfect for sauntering along the coast into Dinard, and just a short drive from other seaside towns and beaches
    • With just five rooms, it has an intimate boutique feel for romantic getaways, or you can rent the whole villa for larger groups
    • The sea views from the living room and some of the bedrooms are sublime
    • One suite has an extra twin room, so it's perfect for families
    • The food is said to be exceptional and we love that it’s locally sourced

Lows

    • There is no pool
    • The style is a little loud for some, others adore it
    • You'll have to go out for lunch and dinner is only served Tues-Sat

Best time to go

Dinard is crowded in July and August, so keep this in mind if you’re hoping for a peaceful beach holiday. We recommend visiting in May or June, when the weather is generally pleasant. Being in a warm gulf stream, Dinard is generally milder than even the neighbouring towns on the coast. If you’re looking to rub shoulders with cinophiles, opt for the autumn when Dinard hosts the Festival of British Cinema. The villa is closed in January and November weekdays.

Our top tips

There's a beautiful market in Dinard open every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday until 1pm. Stop in and stock up on local cheeses, cured meats, fresh bread, fruit and wine for the perfect picnic on the beach.

Eating

Breakfast is served around the family-sized table in the sunlit dining room, and includes a scrumptious spread of bread, pastries, cakes and homemade delicacies along with cereals, dairy products, cheeses, local jams, butter, fresh fruit, tea and coffee. You can also request a full English or Irish breakfast.

For dinner, pull up a chair at their table d'hôtes, where Chef Rémi Ledauphin serves up refined French cuisine from Tuesday to Saturday evenings. Here, each dish is a testament to Brittany’s terroir, pulling the delicate flavours from the nearby sea and fresh vegetables and herbs from their kitchen garden.

You'll have to pop out for all your lunches and dinners Sun-Mon. But with Dinard on your doorstep, and Saint-Malo a short drive away, you won't struggle to find good restaurants nearby. Just a short stroll along the coast there's Le Carthagène, a casual seaside spot serving up incredibly fresh seafood and wine right on the water. In Dinard, Restaurant La Passerelle looks delicious for slightly more refined seafood with sea views, and there are several bistro options in town like Ombelle and Restaurant le Boulevard.
